Westfield fire raises questions about reductions to public safety

Ferraro's restaurant, a favorite dining spot in Westfield and a local landmark, was destroyed by a fire last week, raising questions about reductions to public safety.

Residents are still talking about how a restaurant burned down half a block away from a firehouse. Vice President Jim Ryan of FMBA Local 30 says that fire, along with another recent blaze, were made worse by staff reductions.

Councilman David Haas (D-Westfield) says the town has been reducing staff across all departments, but may have to rethink cuts to public safety.
