Sinkhole causing major delays on NJ Turnpike

(AP) - New Jersey Turnpike crews hope to bedone fixing a sinkhole that's caused major traffic delays on thetoll road by 7 p.m.

The sinkhole -- 3 feet wide by 3 feet deep -- forced closure ofthe left lane on the northbound turnpike south of Interchange 8 inEast Windsor Township Monday afternoon.

Traffic has been backed up for nearly 12 miles for most of theafternoon, and officials have been advising northbound drivers touse alternate routes if possible.

Turnpike spokesman Tom Feeney says crews filled the hole withconcrete at midafternoon. Once the concrete cures, it will betopped with asphalt, which also must set. Feeney says crews hope tohave the lane reopened by 7 p.m.
