Barnegat police: 2 sustain minor injuries in NJ Transit bus crash

Two people sustained minor injuries when a New Jersey Transit bus crashed into a business along Route 9 in Barnegat this morning.

Police say shortly after 6 a.m., the bus smashed into a utility pole, hit a groove in the road and crashed into the house. The building, which is empty, was not severely damaged.

The bus was carrying nine people from Lakewood to Atlantic City. Police say after the crash, one man jumped out of a window, but everyone else waited for assistance. "When the pole came down, wires on top of the bus [were] obviously a concern, the bus could be electrified at that point," Barnegat Police Lt. Keith Germain said. Officials say Route 9 remains closed between West Bay Avenue and Gunning River Road, and will hopefully reopen in time for the evening rush.
