Investigators: Bayonne plant fire was electrical

Investigators say the fire that caused an explosion at a Bayonne chemical plant was electrical.

Authorities say the fire started at around 7 p.m. Wednesday in a switching station at the IMTT Cogeneration plant. According to officials, none of the flames spread to the on-site tanks holding the chemicals and petroleum.

Investigators believe a failure in one of the power systems led to the fire and explosion. Neighbors say they heard and felt the explosion from miles away. Route 440 and the Bayonne Bridge were closed Wednesday night, but have since reopened.

The tank terminal is the fourth largest in the world. It transfers fuel that comes in from overseas.
