Drivers call roadway in Barnegat hazardous

A New Jersey Transit bus crashed into a home on Route 9 in Barnegat two weeks ago. The uneven pavement is considered to be part of what caused that accident.

Only the northbound lane of Route 9 in Barnegat has been paved. In some spots, police say it was left two and a half inches higher than the southbound lane. The state has since added more asphalt in the most uneven areas, smoothing it over to be more like a ramp, versus a drop between lanes.

Even with the improvements to the roadway since the accident, police in Barnegat say it isn't enough.

The DOT has now agreed to finish paving the areas that were started instead of continuing to do just one lane. The state says it should be done by June 30.
