Suspect in fatal shooting of Newark officer in custody

The Newark Police Department announced tonight that a suspect in the fatal shooting of Newark police officer William Johnson is in custody.

Authorities identified the person in custody as Rasul McNeil-Thomas, 19. He was arrested at his home in the 300 block of Leslie Street. He is being charged with conspiracy to commit carjacking, unlawful possession of a gun and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose. Police are still searching for another suspect.

Officials say officer Johnson was shot last night at the Texas Fried Chicken and Pizza restaurant on Lyons Avenue. Two other people, a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were also shot.

The veteran officer was inside getting a slice of pizza when a black Mercedes-Benz pulled up, fired several shots and fled the scene.

The officer was taken to UMDNJ-University Hospital, where he was rushed into surgery and later pronounced dead.
