Family, friends say slain Newark officer was a gentle giant
Slain Newark Police Officer Willie Johnson is described by many friends and family who spoke with News 12 New Jersey as a good man and a wonderful officer.
Detective Levi Holmes says Johnson reflected the best of Newark's South Ward, where he was born and lived. Of Johnson, Holmes said, "You have a toughness when you come from the South ward and he had that in a very quiet way."
For the last two years of his life, Johnson worked on video surveillance duty at Newark's Communication Division. Flags in the city flew at half-staff Friday, in honor of the man some called a gentle giant. Suspect in fatal shooting of Newark officer in custody
