Muslim-Americans in Paterson protest Lowe's calling for boycott

In response to Lowe's Retail Home Improvement store's decision to pull ads from the TLC show "All American Muslim," members of the Muslim-American community staged a protest Friday evening in Paterson.

News 12 New Jersey spoke with protesters outside the home improvement store on McLean Boulevard. Protesters say the store should never have pulled ads from the reality series, which follows the everyday lives of Muslim families.

Lowe's decided to remove the advertising after a conservative Christian group in Florida urged the store to pull its ads. The group in Florida says the show promotes an Islamic agenda.

Muslims at the protest say the decision by Lowe's infringes on their civil rights by portraying them as less American. They believe Lowe's and all companies should support a show that makes them look like everyone else.

Lowe's said this week that it stands by its statement that it pulled the ads after the show became a "lightning rod for people to voice complaints from a variety of perspectives - political, social and otherwise." The improvement store's statement has since been removed from its Facebook page.
