Newark police give glimpse of recovered guns

Violent crime is up in Newark this year, but police have pulled hundreds of guns out of neighborhoods. News 12 New Jersey had a rare look at hundreds of guns pulled off the streets of Brick City by officers.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker is pushing his prisoner re-entry programs as a way to stop city shootings. Booker and Police Director Samuel DaMaio are also using a new strategy which they say has helped decrease violent crime in the second half of 2011. Cops are making more traffic stops after dark and finding more weapons.

Stepping up overnight enforcement has allowed Newark to take 337 guns off the streets since June 1, and nearly 600 total this year.
