Laptop containing private student information stolen

School officials have confirmed that a laptop from Warren County Community College containing personal student data has been reported missing.

Officials said as many as 5,461 students or WCCC applicants could have their information compromised.

An employee from the school's financial aid office reported the laptop "missing and possibly stolen" Sept. 27, officials said in a letter to students.

"Although we are not aware of the improper use of any of the personal information, the name and Social Security number of some current and former students was contained on the password-protected laptop and may be accessible to an unauthorized party," the statement said.

The college is offering the individuals whose personal information was on the laptop one year of identity protection services at no cost to the students.
