Man says attack against him was homophobic hate crime

Luis Rivera says he prayed tosurvive the brutal beating he endured. The 39-year-old Jersey City mansays he knows homophobia played a role in the brutal stabbing thatnearly took his life.

Rivera says he was attacked by a new roommate who knew he wasgay and gave no indication that it would be an issue.

Three weeks following the attack, Rivera is still hospitalized. Officials say Joseph DeLeo has been charged with attempted murder in the attack.

Rivera says he's only alive today because he prayed and becauseanother roommate intervened. That roommate suffered serious injuries as well.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward Defazio says his office willpresent their evidence to a grand jury and let them decide if theattack should be treated as a hate crime.
