200 Lakewood school bus drivers worked this Thanksgiving
About 200 school bus drivers worked today so that Orthodox Jewish students in Lakewood could attend private school.
Some 400 drivers usually handle 18,000 students in Lakewood. But officials reached a compromise after some drivers complained about having to work on Thanksgiving to fulfill a state mandate to provide busing.
Parents carpooled on the holiday in the past. However, officials say that's no longer practical because the number of students has grown.
As a thank you, the Lakewood Board of Education bought pumpkin pies for the drivers.
