Passaic River crests, flooding continues in Paterson's streetsPosted: Updated:
Emergency personnel say they rescued about 50 people from their homes in flood-ravaged Paterson as the Passaic River reached its crest yesterday.
Tonight, that river still rages on, moving quickly over its banks. Many News 12 New Jersey spoke with say the river is the worst they've ever seen it. The rescues followed about 100 on Monday as floodwaters spawned by Hurricane Irene poured into the streets of the city. A large number of people were taken from their homes in rescue boats.
Water was rushing over the West Broadway Bridge early this morning.
According to the National Weather Service, the Passaic River at Little Falls crested yesterday at 14.17 feet. The river is expected to remain at major flood stage for most of the week.
