Jersey City renames street for deceased officer

Jersey City renamed a street Wednesday in honor of a police officer killed 10 years ago.

The northwest corner of Jewett Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard was renamed Domenick J. Infantes Jr. Way in a ceremony this morning.

The 29-year-old officer was off-duty on July 4, 2001, when he tried to act as a peacemaker in a dispute between neighbors over fireworks being shot off in the street. One of the men struck Infantes in the head with a metal pipe. He died two days later. His assailant was convicted of reckless manslaughter and sentenced to 10½ years in prison.

Infantes grew up in Jersey City and was a seven-year veteran of the force.
