Investigators probing W. Milford plane crash

Federal authorities are looking into what caused a small plane to crash in West Milford Saturday afternoon, seriously injuring the aircraft's pilot.

Authorities say Vatche Aghjayan, 46, of Alpine was trying to land his Aero Vodochody L39C Albatros at Greenwood Lake Airport when it rolled over around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The high-performance military jet trainer went down a steep embankment and came to rest upside down in a heavily wooded area.

Fire officials say it took more than two hours to free Aghjayan, who was alone in the plane. He was then flown to Morristown Medical Center, where he was treated for undisclosed injuries and released late Saturday night.

The plane had departed earlier Saturday from Orange County Airport in Montgomery, N.Y.
