Caution urged as sewage leaks into Hudson River
Swimmers and kayakers are being urged to avoid contact with the water on the Hudson and in New York Harbor, because a wastewater treatment plant is spewing raw sewage into the waterway. Officials say the spill should not impact New Jersey beaches south of Sandy Hook.
New York City Department of Environmental Protection officials are urging people to avoid recreational activities in New York Harbor on the Hudson River, on the East River along Manhattan, and the Harlem River.
DEP staff and contractors are inside the facility assessing damage and performing cleanup. Some wastewater is being diverted to other facilities.
The plant became disabled by a serious fire Wednesday. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says workers are making progress in repairing the damaged plant.
