108 police officers, dozens of workers to be laid off in TrentonPosted: Updated:
The City of Trenton announced yesterday that it is moving forward with a plan to lay off 108 police officers and dozens of city workers in mid-September.
The plan eliminates 79 patrolmen, 20 sergeants, eight lieutenants and one captain from the city's force. The proposal also cuts 36 civilian jobs and six city utility workers.
According to a press release yesterday from Mayor Tony Mack's office, "The City of Trenton is executing this layoff plan for reasons of economy and efficiency." The mayor's office estimates the move will save the city $5.4 million.
The city said it submitted the amended layoff plan to the New Jersey CivilService Commission last week.
The layoffs are expected to take effect on Sept. 15.
