Belvidere middle school students to face drug tests

(AP) - A northern New Jersey school district hasadopted a voluntary random drug testing program for middle schoolstudents.

Parental consent is required for sixth, seventh, and eighthgrade students in the Belvidere school district. Parents must alsopay for the cost of the treatment program.

Those who test positive will be required to attend an earlyintervention program and visit a guidance counselor or nurse atleast six times.

Superintendent Dirk Swaneveld tells The Express-Times of Easton,Pa., he hopes the program "works as a deterrent and to helpkids."

Belvidere High School has had random drug testing for athletesand students in extracurricular activities since 2008.
