Jersey City man killed in police-involved shooting

A 28-year-old Jersey City man died following a police-involved shooting early this morning on Monticello Avenue.

According to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio, police officer Luis Mecka fired at Deron Kittrell after he pointed a gun at Mecka and his K-9 partner following a chase on foot.

Jersey City police say Mecka was responding to a report of shots fired a few blocks away on Martin Luther King Drive when he came across Kittrell.

Kittrell was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m.
