Hundreds attend funeral for Newark police officer William Johnson

Hundreds of family members, friends, fellow officers and city officials were in attendance today at the funeral of slain Newark police officer William Johnson.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo, Jr. and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio were among several officials who spoke at the New Hope Baptist Church. Johnson's partner on the force for eight years, officer Alex Rosa, also paid his respects, saying he is still in shock over the news. "Eight years working with someone," officer Rosa said. "It takes a lot out of you, so when I heard it, I couldn't believe it." Other detectives who graduated from the city's police academy with Johnson said they remembered him as a genuinely good person with no shortage of jokes. Johnson was laid to rest at the Hollywood Memorial Cemetery in Union.
