Nearly 200 suspects arrested in Jersey City bust

Officials in Jersey City have announced the arrest of nearly 200 people following a five-month investigation.

The goal of the investigation, which was known as Operation Summer Shield, was to round up alleged criminals before they were able to take to the streets during the summer months, a period in which violent crimes spike.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy says residents? safety was the top concern when rounding up the potentially violent offenders and a significant number of illegal guns. The investigation included federal, state, county and local police.

The investigation operated under the acronym VEST for Violent Enterprise Source Targeting, according to Jersey City Police Chief Tom Comey.
