Residents in Newton left dry after water main break
Authorities in Newton say more than 2,000 residents are without water after a public works crew broke a line connecting the town to a reservoir.
An Andover public works crew was repairing a catch basin for a storm drain when the break occurred around 8:15 a.m. yesterday.
The lack of water forced the Sussex County Courthouse to close early yesterday and prompted officials to order portable toilets for poll workers staffing today's primary election.
Three water tankers were called in to provide water for Newton residents last night.
Town officials say it could take 24 to 48 hours to restore service completely. Officials say residents who have water pressure should continue to boil their water first until further notice.
