AP: Gov. Christie, Senate president strike benefits dealPosted: Updated:
(AP) - New Jersey's Republican governor andDemocratic Senate president have reached a deal to change pensionsand health benefits for all public workers.
A person familiar with the talks tells The Associated Press theagreement would require employees to pay more for retirement andhealth benefits as of July 1 if the Legislature goes along. Theperson insisted on anonymity because the deal has not been madeofficial.
Details are still being worked out by Democrats who control theSenate.
Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver has been involved in the talks,but it's not known whether she has agreed to the deal.
An official announcement is planned for later Wednesday. Both the pension and retiree health care systems are seriouslyunderfunded.
