Firefighters contain strip mall fire in Toms River

Firefighters contained a fire inside a small strip mall today along Route 166 in Toms River.

The fire apparently started just after 8 a.m. near a Laundromat located within the shopping plaza. The fire quickly spread to the other three businesses in the plaza.

At least 150 firefighters from 21 different fire companies were called in to fight the blaze amid temperatures in the upper 90s. Fire officials said the extra crews were called in as a precaution due to the hot weather.

Emergency medical crews were standing by as firefighters relieved each other frequently while operating at the scene. One Toms River firefighter was taken to Community Medical Center for exhaustion.
