Officials: Mother of abandoned newborn is teacher

Officials say they believe the woman who left her baby on the steps of Weehawken High School last week is a West New York School teacher.

The mother's name has not been released, but the school superintendent in neighboring West New York says she's a math teacher at Memorial High School and has worked with special education students since 2007.

The woman is now undergoing evaluation at Jersey City Medical Center and could face charges even if the evaluation reveals emotional or psychological issues.

The 1-month-old baby girl was found face down on the sidewalk outside Weehawken High School last Friday. According to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, the infant had a fractured skull and other injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma.

The baby has undergone surgery and is expected to survive.Baby found on steps of Weehawken H.S. Baby found at Weehawken H.S. has multiple fractures
