Treasurer: NJN will cease even if takeover stopped

New Jersey Network will "cease to exist"as most know it if lawmakers scrap a deal to allow a New Yorkpublic broadcasting station to operate it.

State Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff told a Senate hearingThursday the network will continue to broadcast only thebare-minimum programming required keep its license.

The treasurer says layoffs would take place and there would beno nightly newscast.

The law that granted the treasurer authority to negotiate thedeal gives the Legislature the right to nullify it by June 28.

The Assembly is expected to vote Thursday on a resolution toblock the transfer to WNET-TV.

The transfer is scheduled to go into effect July 1.
