Amtrak probing cause of 3rd disruption in 3 days

Posted: Updated:

(AP) - Rail service has been restored along theNortheast Corridor, yet heavy delays persist after Amtrak and NewJersey Transit service was temporarily suspended at the start ofrush hour Thursday.

Amtrak says trains are running along the Northeast corridorbetween New York and Philadelphia. It's investigating why voltageproblems Thursday afternoon resulted in trains being held atstations for about 90 minutes. Power problems also caused servicesuspensions Thursday morning.

NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coastline andMidtown Direct lines are also running again after being suspendeddue Amtrak's ongoing power problems. Passengers are facing delaysof up to 90 minutes on those lines.

The problem apparently wasn't related to a transformer fire thathalted service on the Northeast Corridor for several hours onTuesday.

Senator Lautenberg has released a statement on the delay, which reads as follows:

"This is the third time in 3 days New Jersey commuters have been stranded because of electrification problems on our train corridors. Rails are the lifeblood of our state's economy and we can't afford another summer of frequent delays. I'm working with Secretary LaHood to invest in significant upgrades to the Northeast Corridor so that New Jersey commuters have a faster, more reliable ride to work. While some in Congress are trying to derail improvements to the Corridor, we will continue working to modernize it so New Jersey Transit and Amtrak trains are on time and best prepared to serve commuters."

sorry to interrupt
