1 dead, 1 critical after tree falls on campers

Authorities say William Arias, 46, was killed and his wife, Elcetia Arias, is in guarded condition after a large tree toppled onto several campers in Delaware Township this morning.

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) says the incident happened at the Bulls Island campground in the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, north of Lambertville. DEP spokesperson Larry Ragonese says the Sycamore tree crashed onto the campsite at around 6 a.m.

The couple's two children, ages 12 and 10, and their 8-year-old nephew were not seriously injured in what officials are calling a "freak accident."

The DEP says the fallen tree had rotten roots.
