Body found near where Coast Guardsman went missing

Authorities say they have recovered a body in Barnegat Bay this afternoon near where a Coast Guardsman fell off a speedboat on Saturday.

State police say the body was found about 2 miles off Berkeley Island County Park by a passing boater around 9 a.m.

State police say an autopsy will determine if the body is 25-year-old Petty Officer Nicholas Holmes. Even without the results being released, Holmes' family members say they believe that the body recovered is him.

The Coast Guard said yesterday that Holmes and another man were tossed from the 23-foot boat after being rocked by a wave left by another boat.

The other man, who reportedly sustained a fracture to his arm, was immediately pulled from the water.

The Coast Guard said it launched an air and sea search of the Tices Shoal section in Lacey Township before calling it off last night. Officials say 78-square nautical miles were searched.

Holmes was an active duty member of the Coast Guard stationed at Air Station Atlantic City as a machinery technician, according to a Coast Guard news release.
