Elizabeth police officer accused of extorting illegal immigrants

Elizabeth police officer Rocco Malgieri, who is accused of threatening to turn in undocumented immigrants, appeared in court today.

The investigation began at a pizza shop in Elizabeth, when an undocumented worker walked through the door and up to two Elizabeth police officers. She said one of their fellow officers had threatened to turn her into immigration unless she handed over money.

Malgieri's attorney, Donald DiGioia, warned the public to let the issue play out in court. DiGioia said "He as a police officer is entitled to the same rights as everyone else and that is that he is presumed innocent."

Officer Malgeiri's next court date is scheduled for May 18.
