Business owners call probation office dirty

Businesses in Stafford Township say that their neighbor, a probation office, is a mess.

Owners of shops in the strip mall on Route 72 say that the office where ex-cons from southern Ocean County check in with their probation officers is filthy. They say they're finding dirty diapers, cigarette butts, used condoms and other trash.

Becky Tarditi, who is co-owner of Pangaea Naturals Health Food Store in Driftwood Plaza, says businesses have left the strip mall and her sales have dropped 10-15 percent since the office moved in two years ago.

Tarditi also complains of loitering and foul language along with the litter left behind. However, when News 12 New Jersey visited the strip mall, people were seen checking in and out and leaving right after.

The owner of the property says business is down and storefronts are empty because of the poor economy and because of the probation office.

A spokesperson for the Ocean County Courts says there have been several clients who are no longer allowed to check in with the strip mall probation office because they couldn't behave properly.
