Former Newark mayor caught by red light cameras
Former Newark Mayor Sharpe James appeared in court today to plead guilty to a ticket that he says he got from a red light camera, despite being waved through by a traffic officer.
James joins a long list of people who say they received a ticket they don't deserve. News 12 New Jersey recently investigated and found that many drivers were ticketed in Newark, particularly around the Prudential Center, even though they were waved through an intersection by an officer.
James says he wonders whether streets should even remain open around the center during events. He says closing the streets would require fewer officers to direct traffic and would likely cut down on confusion with the red light cameras.
