Tanker overturns on Rt. 440 causing major fuel spill

Police were called out to deal with a tanker truck that overturned on Route 440 southbound near the Garden State Parkway this evening.

Police confirm the tanker, which was leaking, was carrying 8,500 gallons of gas.

As of 10 p.m., Sgt. Brian Polite, of the New Jersey State Police, confirmed that firefighters were able to contain the leak and stop the fuel from possibly igniting.

The driver of the tanker was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition, the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident escaped unharmed, according to Sgt. Polite.

Police say they expect the accident to be cleared by the early morning, but until then they ask drivers to avoid Route 440.
