US education secretary visits Newark
(AP) - U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is inNewark publicizing a program aimed at recruiting more teachers towork in urban and rural areas.
He's hosting a town hall meeting Wednesday at a Newark youth andemployment center to talk about the Department of Education's TEACHCampaign. Mayor Cory Booker, community leaders and educators areattending.
The TEACH program provides educational materials, informationand job listings to encourage people to go into teaching and workin underserved areas. One of the primary objectives is get moreAfrican-American and Latino teachers into the target schools.
Revamping Newark's education system has been a priority forBooker. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg donated $100 million lastfall toward the effort.
