New security chief named to take over operations at Newark airport

Newark Liberty International Airport is getting a new security chief.

The Transportation Security Administration has named Donald Drummer as its new federal security director at the airport. Drummer previously held similar positions at JFK Airport and BWI Airport in Maryland.

"Don has done an outstanding job at JFK and BWI and has proven himself in challenging operational environments," said Lee Kair, TSA's Assistant Administrator, Office of Security Operations.

Drummer replaces Barbara Bonn Powell. She's leaving to take a TSA post at the agency's headquarters in Virginia. She'd been the airport's security director since July 2007.

The change in leadership comes after several security lapses at the airport this year.

In February, part of one terminal was shut down after an improperly screened passenger entered a secure area, and a TSA security officer and supervisor pleaded guilty to stealing money from travelers' bags.
