Pilot killed in crash at Somerset Airport, plane reported missing Tuesday

The pilot of a single-engine plane was killed after his plane crashed in a wooded area of Bedminster Township, near the Somerset Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the single-engine Lake LA-4-250 aircraft took off from Somerset Airport on Tuesday evening.

Sometime after the pilot's family filed a report for a missing person with Chester Township Police. Police learned the pilot had a plane at Somerset Airport and requested help from Bedminster Township police. The plane was founded in a wooded area Thursday at around 1 p.m.

Family members of the victim say the pilot was the sole occupant of the plane. He was reportedly killed when the plane crashed.

The pilot's son-in-law tells News 12 New Jersey that he was an experienced pilot.

Other pilots at the airport say that because of the location of the wreckage, the crash likely happened on take off. News 12 New Jersey has not been able to confirm this with the FAA or National Tranportation Safety Board.

The FAA says it will investigate the crash, and the NTSB will determine probable cause.

The name of the pilot has not been released.
