Vigil held for Pemberton student, teacher killed in crashes
Students, faculty, parents and friends in Pemberton Township gathered Thursday evening to pay tribute to a teacher and student killed in separate car crashes right before the new school year began.
Teacher Allison McGinnis, 29, was set to start her second year teaching at Helen Fort Middle School. She was killed in a crash in Southampton Township on Aug. 27.
McGinnis' former student, 13-year-old Janiya Castleberry, died Aug. 20 from injuries she sustained in a car accident earlier that month.
The vigil was held at McDowell Field at Helen Fort Middle School. Hundreds of people attended to show their support and offer condolences.
School officials said a few words about McGinnis and Castleberry and then students were allowed to make comments and share memories.
The families of both victims lit candles to mark the memorial and the new school year.
