Ramapo College program to combat drinking after sexual assault
The Ramapo College president is enlisting the help of the Mahwah Police Department to help deter underage drinking after a student was sexually assaulted on campus.
Police say the student was assaulted at the Overlook dorm by another student during the college's "Welcome Week." The victim declined to pursue criminal charges against her alleged attacker.
The college president wants police officers to help control underage drinking, which he says is a factor in most sexual assaults.
"We're not going to stop this in one day or one week," says Mahwah Police Chief Jim Batelli. "The program that we want to put together is a long-term program to address underage drinking as well as the topic of sexual assault."
The alleged attacker has been suspended and removed from Ramapo's campus pending the outcome of an investigation.
