Five teenagers face numerous charges stemming from an alleged carjacking and police pursuit in Newark that left another suspect dead.
Essex County prosecutors announced Wednesday that the youths, who range in age from 14 to 17, are charged with receiving stolen property and weapons offenses. One of them also was charged with carjacking.
Prosecutors say the carjacking occurred around 6:40 a.m. Tuesday. They believe the vehicle was used in a series of other felonies that day, including robberies and shootings.
Newark Police eventually pursued the car, and the six occupants jumped out in a neighborhood near Interstate 78. Three of the suspects were immediately captured, while two others barricaded themselves in a nearby home before they were apprehended there by a SWAT team.
The sixth suspect, 18-year-old Newark resident Tyree Crawford, was struck and killed by a police car.
