Demolition begins for Jersey City apartments

Some old buildings in Jersey City became history Saturday morning in order to pave the way for new housing.
Three six-story buildings were imploded next to the former Jersey City Medical Center to make way for the new Montgomery Gardens apartment buildings.
The $44 million redevelopment will include low-rise, four-story buildings. Ninety percent of the 126 units will be affordable housing with rent based on family income. The other 10 percent will be listed at market value. There are 68 units that will be ready for move-in by next year.
The original Montgomery Gardens was built in 1952. The redevelopment will provide a fresh start for an area that was riddled with crime for many years.
"There is no reason that people who have made Jersey City special shouldn't have the opportunity to live in the absolute best neighborhoods," Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said.
