Demolition workers will implode part of the Montgomery Gardens public housing complex in Jersey City Saturday to make room for new construction.
Three vacant buildings are slated for removal, and the work will cause several street closures in the area between 6 a.m. and noon.
The 62-year-old high-rises were considered an eyesore by city officials who are looking to gentrify the McGinley Square neighborhood.
Montgomery Gardens sits just below the Beacon, which houses luxurious condos in the former medical center building.
After the implosion, 126 new units will be erected. Most of those will be set aside for low- and middle-income tenants.
At one point, 1,200 people lived in the Montgomery Gardens complex, but many were relocated as buildings shut down.
Two more buildings will be demolished in the future, and the last remaining structure will become senior housing, according to officials.
