Forecast: Weekend warmup on the way; tracking Tropical Storm Erika

Posted: Updated:

Cooler temperatures closed out the work week across the Garden State.

News 12 New Jersey Meteorologist Dave Curren says warmer temperatures are on the way for Saturday and Sunday.

Curren says highs on both days are expected to flirt with 90 degrees.

The warmer weather is expected to stick around for much of next week.

The News 12 New Jersey Weather Center is keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Erika as it churns in the Caribbean.

The deadly storm, which has been lashing Puerto Rico with heavy rains, had maximum sustained winds early Friday near 50 mph.

The storm is southeast of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and is moving west-northwest at about 17 mph.

Curren says the storm isn't expected to directly impact New Jersey, but is certainly worth watching for unexpected shifts. Forecasts show that it will likely remain a tropical storm when it makes landfall.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has a declared a state of emergency as the storm nears his state.
