Officials say Monmouth County's gun buyback program yielded 428 guns to authorities after a two-day effort to reduce the number of weapons on the street with no questions asked.

A spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office says the agency spent just over $30,000 on handguns and assault weapons turned in by residents in Asbury Park and Keansburg over the weekend.

County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni says funding for the buyback program came from a donation by the Community Foundation of New Jersey and an anonymous donor.

Gramiccioni says the final count was 15 assault weapons, 80 semi-automatic handguns, 206 revolvers, 33 shotguns and 56 rifles.

"There was an overwhelming response to the gun buyback program this year. The program took in more weapons and dispersed more cash than last year, and there was a 300 percent increase in the number of assault weapons voluntarily surrendered to the program. The program was a resounding success here in Monmouth County," Gramiccioni says. 

After the guns are turned in, they are checked through a national database to determine if they were stolen. Stolen weapons are returned, the rest are eventually destroyed.
