Group calls for investigation into Newark archbishop

Posted: Updated:

One of New Jersey's most powerful Catholics is under fire, accused of mishandling complaints about pedophile priests.

The members of the group Catholic Whistleblowers are calling for Newark Archbishop John Myers to be investigated. They say Bishop Meyers disregarded complaints of sexual abuse in Newark, as well as in Peoria, Illinois, where he was bishop 25 years ago.

Victims and parents of victims say the bishop should be investigated by the Vatican court recently established by Pope Francis. The pontiff created the tribunal last month to investigate bishops.

A spokesperson for the Newark Archdiocese says that Bishop Meyers has been "very aggressive in pursuing allegations of sexual misconduct...from reporting accusations to law enforcement to having our Archdiocesan Review Board investigate matters."
