Police: ATM workers forget bag with $141K, bag then stolen by two men
Police officers in Mahwah are looking for the men who they say drove off with a bag filled with over $141,000 in cash.
Two employees with ATMForUs.com were replenishing ATMs in the area and left the bag on a lawn on Industrial Avenue in Mahwah Monday morning. They drove away, apparently forgetting that they left the bag on the ground.
The men then called the police to report it missing.
Sometime after 11:15 a.m. Monday, surveillance video shows a passenger in a white van drive by the lost bag. The driver is seen making a U-turn and the passenger is seen grabbing the bag.
"At some point, we have to assume they opened the bag, looked inside and realized the amount of money that was involved," says Mahwah Police Officer William Hunt.
The van was seen in other video surveillance pulling into a nearby auto repair business and stealing used tires. The van is believed to be a white GMC Savana.
Mahwah police say they're contacting local and area businesses to find out if they've had any run-ins with the two suspects.
Mahwah police do not believe the ATM employees intentionally left the bag on the ground.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Mahwah Detective Michael Grassi or Eric Larsen at 201-529-1000 extension 216 or 217.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this reporter.
NOTE: A previous version of this story mistakenly identified the amount of money stolen as $150,000.
