Martell's Tiki Bar liquor license approval renewed

The Point Pleasant Beach borough council has approved the liquor license for Martell's Tiki Bar for another year, two years after a customer was involved in a fatal drunken driving crash.
The council voted to approve the renewal in a unanimous decision at Tuesday night's borough council meeting. The vote comes after the Alcoholic Beverage Control division ruled bartenders at Martell's unlawfully served a woman after she was already drunk. That woman then drove away from the bar and was killed in a car wreck. Another driver was seriously injured.
Ron Gasiorowski, Martell's attorney, says the bar has complied with everything asked of them by the ABC, including hiring a compliance officer and retraining staff on monitoring alcohol consumption.
"You have to understand the state was faced with a serious situation. They chose, based on my client's reputation, not to revoke the license. It's very rare for that to happen," says Gasiorowski.
As part of the agreement with the state ABC, Martell's will have their license suspended for one month, but that will happen after the busy summer season.
