Witness raises funds after fatal hit-and-run

A witness to a fatal hit-and-run accident rallied community members to raise money for the family of a 15-year-old Leonardo girl killed Tuesday.
Marissa Procopio was struck and killed near the corner of Route 36 and Avenue D by a driver who allegedly sped away from the scene. She was a student at Henry Hudson Regional High School and was walking home from a friend's house when the driver blew a red light and ran her over as she attempted to cross, according to a witness.
The witness, Lisa Natal, owns a restaurant at the intersection. She says she's donating half of the money collected Saturday to Procopio's family.
Natal says she ran at the driver, who swerved into her restaurant's parking lot and made eye contact before speeding off.
Police later identified Toni Marletta, also of Leonardo, as the driver. Marletta has not yet been charged, but an investigation is ongoing.
