Police shoot, wound knife-wielding man in Orange

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says police shot a suspect in Orange Saturday morning after the man lunged at an officer with a knife.
Officials say the incident took place at the corner of Central and Oakwood avenues.
Police from East Orange responded to reports of a man with a knife somewhere near Central Avenue at around 9 a.m., according to Anthony Ambrose, chief of investigations with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Officers followed the man west into Orange, along Central Avenue, where they were met by Orange police.
Police asked the suspect to drop the knife and used pepper spray when he refused. The suspect then allegedly lunged at an Orange officer. That officer, who was later taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, fired at the suspect. Another officer also reportedly fired at the suspect. Officials say it is undetermined how many shots were fired in total.
The suspect was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
