The company that was contracted to raise a Union Beach home that collapsed Monday was not a licensed contractor in New Jersey, according to state records.

The home on Prospect Avenue in Union Beach was badly damaged during Superstorm Sandy. Earlier this week, the home was in the process of being raised when it fell off its wooden supports. It had to be immediately demolished.

The project was part of New Jersey's federally-funded Rehabilitation, Reconstruction, Elevation and Mitigation program. The job was assigned to a state-qualified, out-of-state firm that believed it was permitted to hire unregistered subcontractors.
