Son of Jersey City fire chief killed during robbery

A man fatally shot in the Greenville section of Jersey City has been identified as the son of the Jersey City fire chief.

Darcel Rivers, 35, was shot in the back of the head just before 4 a.m. Thursday on Fulton Avenue near Van Cleef Street. Police say he may have been shot during a robbery.

Chief Darren Rivers says his son, who was visiting from Rhode Island, was walking to his mother's home after hanging out with friends a few blocks away. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he later died.

Investigators are reviewing security camera footage which may have recorded part of the crime.

In a statement, Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill says, "We are working with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office on some significant leads to apprehend the individuals responsible."

Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey the area has recently seen a lot of gun violence.
